What is the main difference Amongst Automobile Emblems, Badges & Decals? by John R Martin Admittedly, the title of this article may appear to be three different ways of saying the same thing. However, there are differences, and that抯 what I want to discuss in the article. They抮e important because each one sends a message about you to those around you, whether you抮e driving or parked. And, that message may be quite different from what you supposed when you put it on in the first place. What do the words mean? Originally, the word emblem meant 搃nlaid ornamental work Launch IV Scanner,?that is, a symbol of something else ?in this case, that of wealth, because of the time and skill required to do it. Badge probably became synonymous with emblem in the 15th century. Decal, an abbreviated version of 揹ecalcomania,?a French word that came into use in the early 20th century referred to the English practice of 搕ransfer printing?invented in the 18th century. This process transferred the ink from a design or drawing to the glass or porcelain when it was fired in the kiln. Roget抯 Thesaurus omits decal, but has entries for badge and emblem. Both a badge and an emblem can convey authority, though we tend to think of the former in most cases - a policeman, for example. Occasionally we hear someone抯 behavior referred to as a 揵adge of that profession.?Emblems, however, tend to represent ideas more than authority. Does it matter? Well, actually, it does. Anytime we use a decal, badge or emblem, we are identifying with it in some way, whether it抯 on your car, clothes, or somewhere else. Large decals can depict badges, as they do on police cars, or an emergency vehicle as they do on the top and sides of ambulances. Smaller ones, a.k.a. bumper stickers, are used primarily for information, telling you to support a particular candidate or college sports team, or just to make you laugh. Auto emblems tend to portray either something about the car itself or your relationship to it. Every brand has its own emblem which makes it easier to identify if the name is too small to read or has been taken off of the car altogether, as in some higher end models. A horse on its hind legs means it抯 a Ferrari, a ram抯 head, a Dodge, and a 揕?a Lexus. Somehow a decal just doesn抰 seem sufficient for this kind of symbol. And, I don抰 know about you, but every now and then I see a car that I don抰 recognize. Closer inspection tells me nothing because the body is a kit that抯 been mounted onto someone else抯 frame. Think what an emblem could do for them! What are you saying about yourself? I抳e already said that such symbols send messages. What message do you want to send to others? What do you want them to think about you? Have you ever thought about it? Have you asked an acquaintance for his or her opinion? If you haven抰 GDS tool, you should.
